24 Hours in Travel Hell: Ski Trip 2007

12/6/2009: I wrote this two years ago, after having one of the worst travel experiences I could have imagined. I’m sure many have gone through much worse, but the story was so all-around terrible I had to share.  It’s been sitting on my Facebook notes section for a couple of years, and although a bit heavy-handed at certain points I’ve resisted the urge to edit it for the most part.  I hope you enjoy.

December 21st - 22nd 2007

All times listed in time at location.

Preface:

After a beautiful, relaxing week in Steamboat Springs on the annual Northwestern Ski Trip (with almost 1000 students, the nation’s largest collegiate ski trip) it was time to go home. Andrew Howard and I’s original plan was to take the shuttle to Denver, fly to Chicago (with a layover in Lincoln, Nebraska) get our stuff from Andrew’s apartment in Evanston, and then drive home to Okemos, MI that night. This is what happened.

the recently-finished Silverman hall. great looking building, let’s hope Shapiro makes the same type of investment in students now.

It was very tempting to send, but I’m trying to stay on good terms with Norris Marketing.

An answer to a question for an application I just wrote

The question was, “What is your least favorite thing about Northwestern?”  It gave me a good opportunity to put some of my thoughts on paper, so here it is.

It’s a little meta, but my biggest gripe about Northwestern is how much people gripe about Northwestern.  People are, in my estimation, way too down on our fine school.  Yeah, we’re not a state school and the weather sucks.  Yes, the admin is a little uptight and the buildings are a shade old.  Okay, the girls aren’t all 11’s and the guys can be a bit awkward.  I generally say “get over it.”  We are on an enclosed campus on a beautiful lake next to a huge, diverse city receiving a world-class education.  We have a vibrant social scene held in some part together by a strong Greek community.  The farthest walk possible is 15 minutes, and that’s uphill with a foot of snow.  And yet somehow people still talk about NU as if it’s some type of leper colony full of students who missed the east-coast cut.  Why?

I honestly think that much of people’s negative attitude is a bit of a placebo - you hear that the social scene here sucks so you believe it, even if you don’t have a great yardstick to judge it by.  You hear about your friends at some state school having a million-keg block party with topless mudfights, completely forgetting that we’re still having fun here.  It’s my sincere belief that if we all had just an ounce more pride in our school, an inch more perspective, and maybe a night or two more of cutting loose instead of burying ourselves in a book that we would have a different view on what it means to go to Northwestern.  We’re here because we’re nerds.  We’re here because we love getting an A on an exam as well as getting some T&A on the weekend.  You only have 4 years, so don’t spend them wanting to be anywhere else, because you’ll spend the rest of your life wishing you were back here.  It looks, sounds, feels, and yes, smells like college, so treat it as such and just enjoy it.

Nick Jonas Spotted Visiting Northwestern On Prospective Student Tour

OH MAH GAWD OH MAH GAWD OH MAH GAWD

I don’t know if I’d be able to resist laughing like this every time I saw him around campus if this is true.  God I hope it isn’t that would be the most annoying thing in the world.

I can see it now: Walk into Norbucks for a quick coffee, but there is a huge crowd around the counter.  ’Wow, a lot of people want coffee,’ I’ll think to myself.  But no, it will be a huge mob formed around a Disney genetic clone, clamoring for an autograph or vacant stare in their direction.

And forget it if you think this means Jonas Brothers for A&O Ball.

Dillo Day History

Decidedly old-school, but very interesting.  I wonder how much of this is true…
